Baby Sign is not a new concept, the Deaf community have been signing with their children for decades. What has come to light in recent years though, are the benefits of using sign language with hearing babies and their parents.
When babies are developing they gain use of their hands much earlier than their vocal muscles are developed enough for speech, so it makes sense that they can sign earlier than they can speak. Babies will often learn signs or gestures anyway such as clapping, pointing and waving. Baby Sign just builds on this natural development. Baby Sign gives you a unique window into your baby's world and thoughts. Your baby can tell you if he is thirsty, hungry or in pain, which toy he wants or when he is ready for bed. You will be amazed at just how clued up your little one is once he can start to tell you about his perception of the world around him. Apart from the fun and special bonding you will experience when you can communicate effectively with your child there are also educational and developmental benefits from using signs with your baby, research shows; | - 70% of communication is non-verbal.
- Babies start to communicate from birth using facial expressions and eye contact.
- Baby's motor skills are developed enough to communicate through signs by about 8 months.
- They won't develop comprehensible speech until 12-18 months.
- Signing babies can communicate their needs and are less likely to become frustrated.
- Signing babies learn how to link words together (sentences) and how to link words to objects, and so gain a wider vocabulary earlier than their non-signing counterparts.
- Signing babies have shown greater understanding of language once they start to speak.
- Signing babies have shown a greater interest in books.
